As a standby partner to the United Nations, CANADEM is responding to rapid Humanitarian Relief Efforts such as the Ebola outbreak in west Africa, ISIS (ISIL) in Iraq, as well as to the ongoing conflict in Syria.

Alongside these rapid-onset emergencies, we also support humanitarian efforts in protracted crises in areas such as Ukraine, South Sudan, Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

CANADEM will continue to work with our UN and international Partners to respond to these crises through the generous contributions from Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada (DFATD) and the UK's Department for International Development (DFID).

CANADEM Assists the Humanitarian Relief Efforts to Combat the Ebola Outbreak

CANADEM is assisting the humanitarian crisis in west Africa through the rapid deployment of Humanitarian Relief Experts in response to the Ebola outbreak. It is the largest Ebola outbreak in history, affecting multiple countries in west Africa, including Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone, as well as the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The outbreak began in December 2013, but went undetected until March 2014 after spreading beyond Guinea. As of mid-September, the World Health Organization has reported over 4,300 suspected cases and over 2,300 deaths. The Ebola outbreak is expected to continue for at least another 6 to 9 months, as long as a 'massive' global response is implemented. CANADEM has so far deployed close to 10 Experts to Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Liberia to assist with relief efforts combatting the outbreak.

CANADEM Responds to the Ongoing Conflict in Syria

In 2011, a series of demonstrations throughout Syria led to an ongoing armed conflict between Government Forces and rebel groups that quickly spread to all countries in the region. Humanitarian actors became involved in order to assist the internally displaced population in Syria, as well as the millions of refugees in neighbouring countries. To date, the total number of registered Syrian refugees with UNHCR has reached over 2.5 million.

As a response to the crisis, rapid humanitarian assistance from humanitarian actors and agencies has been provided, and these efforts have continued in 2014. CANADEM has so far deployed over 25 Experts to Syria, Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, and Iraq in order to assist with the humanitarian crisis.

CANADEM Responds to Humanitarian Relief Efforts in the Philippines

CANADEM is responding to the humanitarian crisis in the Philippines through the rapid deployment of Humanitarian Relief Experts in Response to Typhoon Haiyen. On 8-November-2013, Typhoon Haiyan, a category 5 tropical storm, swept through the Philippines, a densely populated country of 92 million people, wreaking devastation in 36 provinces. Many cities and towns experienced widespread destruction, with as much as 90 per cent of housing destroyed in some areas.

Since November, 14.1 million people have been affected by the typhoon and 4.1 million have been displaced as a result. The international community continues to provide relief effort throughout the country. Distribution of emergency food-aid will continue up to May 2014, camp coordination and management has been provided to emergency shelters and camps across the country, and learning supplies and materials have been provided to children. Notwithstanding these efforts, the situation in the Philippines continues to be critical.
